Will Church Live Translation Work If the Wi-Fi Drops?

A fair question, especially in older buildings. Here's exactly what needs a connection, what doesn't, and how to make the whole thing more resilient.

What actually needs internet, and what doesn't

Two separate connections matter here, and it helps to think about them separately. First, the device running the control panel — the laptop or phone taking audio from your sound desk — needs a stable internet connection to send that audio for live translation. Second, each listener's own phone needs its own connection — either the venue's Wi‑Fi or their mobile data — to receive the translated text or audio. These are independent: a shaky Wi‑Fi network affecting some listeners' phones doesn't affect the operator's feed if the operator is on a separate, more reliable connection.

Where possible, connect the operator's laptop to the internet via a wired ethernet cable rather than the building's Wi‑Fi. Wired connections are far less prone to the interference, congestion, and drop-outs that affect Wi‑Fi in a room full of phones. Many church buildings already have an ethernet point near the sound desk from AV or streaming setups — if yours does, use it.

If the operator's connection drops briefly, translation pauses and resumes automatically once the connection returns — there's no need to restart the session or lose the setup. On the listener's side it's similarly forgiving: if their connection is flaky, translation simply arrives a little later than the spoken word; if it drops out completely for a moment, it catches them up once the connection reappears rather than losing anything.

Where it's worth paying attention is a connection that's intermittent or drops out for longer stretches, rather than the odd brief blip — that's worth troubleshooting directly rather than relying on catch-up to paper over it. Some churches sidestep patchy building Wi‑Fi altogether by running the operator's device off a mobile hotspot from one of their own phones instead.

  • Use wired ethernet for the operator's device if a port is available near the sound desk
  • Do a rehearsal from the actual location you'll operate from on the day, not just a test from the church office
  • Check listener Wi‑Fi signal strength in the back rows and balcony, not just near the router

Building Wi‑Fi for guests: is it worth improving?

If your building's Wi‑Fi is genuinely weak in the seating area, improving guest Wi‑Fi is worth doing for reasons well beyond translation — but it isn't strictly required for translation to work, since most modern phones fall back to mobile data automatically.
